PECS
Picture Exchange Communication System
PECS, or the Picture Exchange Communication System, is an alternative communication method developed to assist individuals, particularly children with autism and other communication-related disabilities, in expressing themselves. This system uses pictures to help users articulate their wants and needs to others without relying on verbal output.
The process begins with the individual handing a picture of a desired item to a communication partner in exchange for that item, effectively using the picture as a tool for communication. As users progress, they are taught to construct sentences using the pictures, gradually increasing their ability to communicate more complex ideas and thoughts.
PECS is widely recognized for its effectiveness in fostering functional communication skills, especially in non-verbal individuals or those with limited verbal abilities. It encourages independence and can be used across various settings, including home, school, and the community, aiding in daily communication and interaction.
